A couple of months ago my wife asked me if I could have any bow what would it be; I told her a Korean Horn Bow.  Yesterday was my Birthday and guess what?  I had a short box with a tube attached to it from YMG.  She did well...the bow, the splints for stringing and 6 bamboo arrows.  I only need the hot plate.  I have three other composite bows-that I have been my training ground for bracing a Korean Horn bow.  Can't wait to get her all braced and shooting.

I was wondering how many Korean bowyers are still making the horn bow and who is considered the best?  I also read somewhere that the horn bows of 20+ years ago where wider than those produced now; can anyone verify this?

Thank you for sharing I was just curious on how the training progressed.

I was just wondering for those who have been trained in Korea by a master; how many days a week do you shoot as a beginner?  I was also wondering if you could "walk" us through the process from day one until you are allowed on the range to shoot at the target.

How do you like it compared to your other bows?

This past weekend I was able to introduce a friend's 11 year old daughter to the joys of hunting.  It was a great experience for both of us a few years back I took my daughter on a hunt and I was glad my friend gave me this oppurtunity to teach her daughter.  I have been shooting with her for the past few months and she has become pretty good with the bow and I was going to go on my annual track of the world's most dangerous game....the squirel and she asked if she could go; her mother gave her permission.

It was amazing to see this girl transform from a non stop talker to a cold huntress the moment we changed the field tips on the arrows to "nutters" for the squirels.  When we got into the woods she really concentrated on every sound and her eyes took in every sight.  She was determined to make a meal out of the squirel and use the pelt for "something" she spotted a few squirels and got off some shoots but nothing succesful.  No biggie it didn't dampen her smile.

We may not have gotten a trophy but I got something more important a got a "Hey Jamie...can we do that again next week?"  Now if that isn't the joy of the hunt I don't know what is.

Joe,
I would say my artificial horn bow is quieter and smoother than my carbon but by the eye may be slightly slower in caste but not by a "significant" margin.  The bow is just a pleasure to shoot especially when I am on my game.

Teurcro I find the same thing comparing my Korean bows to my Kassai bows.  The Kassai's have a narrower arrow pass and are easier to shoot but I get better performance caste wise with the Korean bows and the Korean bows are just a pleasure to shoot.

One thing about draw weight and holding.  I believe it should be holding under the stress of the shot meaning when you are aiming at something.  I can hold a lot of weight when I am just concentrating on the weight but put me in front of a target and even though I have the strength to hold the bow forever when I am concentrating on the target I notice the weight more.

I hope that makes sense what I am basically saying is be careful with the weight; physically being able to hold the weight and mentally be able to hold the weight and complete your shot process might be two different things.

Welcome.  I believe there are a few other Korean Traditional Archers from your country on this board.

I have just read some more on the Admiral.  What I forgot to mention in my other posts is how much jealousy and out and out cruelty he survived.  He was the most competent military leader the Koreans had yet he was punished when he was ordered to take his fleet to sea when he knew it was a trap.  He was disgraced and made a "common" soldier only to rise again after Won Kyun had the fleet destroyed.  Won Kyun was one of the jealous rivals who ensured the Admiral's removal from command.

The weather in the US has been unbelievably nice.  In Chicago we have had 80 degrees and low humidity the last two days so I have been shootin'.

I have always used a two blade broadhead, but I am thinking of giving a three blade one a try.  If I do I will let you know.

The video you posted really shows what a well tuned arrow will do to game.  One good humane kill.

The arrow will be your biggest critic is it flying straight, is it making excessive noise on the riser, when it hits the target is it nock left or right, those are the best or worst indicators of your form.  A good prctice is to shoot fletchless arrows at about 10-12 meters away this will show how good your form (release etc) is because the arrow does not have the fletch to stabilize flight and the short range does not allow for the arrow to recover from a sub par release.

I was actually surprised at the form of the lead character.  The arrow heads of the Manchu warriors were also relatively accurate.

Thanks for the download.  I have been looking for something on the Korean arms.

Mechwar thank you for the information.  I was able to get the bow from a guy who got it while he was in Korea.  He rarely shot it; in fact he did not even size the grip.  It really is a nice bow I can't believe how lucky I was to get one cool
Trident thanks for the info.

I just got a new to me SMG semi-horn bow.  The chap I bought it from had not shot it very much and as Ginni  stated the bow is the most pleasant shooting experience known to man.  My question is this: the chap told me there was no special maintenance needed for the bow however I see two bows on the SMG website and I assuming the bow is the artificial bow but is there some way for me to make sure it is not the bow that needs a hot box?

Pete-I honestly don't know if there is any difference in performance.  I know they are cheaper and they have the weight up forward.  Now I don't draw the bow as far as you do so I am not sure what the longest length Ross has but he is a great guy with excellent service.  I am actually going to be ordering some target arrows from him this week.  Here is a picture of the arrow.
