Topic: korean bowhandle and shooting style

hello,

My name is benzi and I´m from germany.
We had a workshop about thumring- shooting last weekend.
15 archers from the whole country came together to exchange their experiences.

After the weekend there were some questions about korean bows and korean shooting style.

The korean bows have a very special and thick handle, how old is this version?

Is the current shooting style a style which was used in the history or is it a new style for shooting the target?

I hope my english is good enough for understanding my questions........

thank you very much and kind regards
benzi

Re: korean bowhandle and shooting style

Hi Benzi,

Welcome!

If you look at the old, traditional horn bows, they have relatively small handles.  Although I'm not exactly sure when the larger handles started being used, I'm going to guess it was in the latter half of the 20th century.

The current rules for KTA were made about fifty years ago; however, the basic style of shooting is historical.  Before 1894, archery was a military testing subject, so the style was different.

That is very interesting regarding the size of the handles.  Is possibly because people's hands are larger now than they were and the larger handle would allow for less chance of torque becuase the bow would not be gripped so tight?

Yeah, I think it has a bit to do with hand sizes.
