Topic: new SMG handle wrap

I bought myself a new SMG for Christmas it is great, but the big question is what is the best way to attach the handle wrap that came with it.  It doesn't look to be sticky backed so what glue would work best?

Re: new SMG handle wrap

The easy way out: just use vet wrap instead.

http://www.amazon.com/Vet-Wrap/dp/B0002V47L0

However if you strictly want to use the given material then usually you cut it up strip by strip and wrap the strips around the handle until completely covered.  The best type of glue to use is some sort of contact cement like below:

The second way is naturally a bit messy and will take some time, not instant gratification but can be done.  The first way only takes a mere seconds though.  Choice is yours.

Thanks,
I hadn't thought of the vet wrap.  I might have something similar around the house.

I figured contact cement would be the best bet but wanted to check and see what others have done.

Re: new SMG handle wrap

Congrats on your buy. I'm jealous. Before finalizing your grip try it first without a permanent fix, you may want to make adjustments afterwards. Traditionally this bows have a very thick grip material and for some hands its too big. My KTB's grip wasn't adjustable so I replaced it altogether. Happy nee year to all!

Re: new SMG handle wrap

Thanks, I have been trying it without any wrap and trying to make subtle adjustments till it fits right.  That has been interesting.  It is a great little bow with a bit of power behind it.

Hold your horses, Geronimo. And Tonto. The reason the material from SMG doesn't have a sticky side will be painfully clear to you after watching this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0a0fcgXfTBA

That is interesting.  The wrap that comes with the SMG is a bit different in style and not sure that would work as well.

Re: new SMG handle wrap

Not all bows have the same grip from the manufacturer. Never the less that video makes a nice suggestion.

Indeed, quite a few Korean bows don't come with that wrap type in the video.  Which should have been painfully obvious based on how the question was asked in the first place. wink

Really... Which Korean bow have you ever shot?

Re: new SMG handle wrap

I'd toss that weird pimply rubber grip that comes with the bow. Just get a nice piece of thick suede and glue wrap it unto your grip

Well, I don't know about that idea. It's traditional. It's functional. It's cool. Just get used to it. Goes with the territory. Of course, you can start your own tradition. Don't believe Koreans will hold it against you. I like it. Try.

Re: new SMG handle wrap

What? In what way is a dish washing pad more traditional than a leather, rayskin or jute wrap?

Anyway you don't know what grip material we're talking about, the SMG comes with a hard plastic/rubber with dimples on it that isn't comfortable or easy to wrap the grip with.

Yes I know. I just bought an SMG laminated horn. By traditional I guess I mean what most would accept as such. Feel free to have your own ideas.

Re: new SMG handle wrap

Something to keep in mind here: These bows that SMG and others make with bamboo, carbon and horn lamination combination are not in of themselves purely 'traditional bows' in make.  Obviously.  They use modern materials and construction methods in a means to create something that carries on in the spirit of tradition but also practicality as today's space age materials provide.  But even modern grip material will appear on the 'true' horn composites:

So the OP should feel free to try whatever is desired based on time, material available, comfort and overall practicality.  A myriad of suggestions and clarifications have been made so OP has a good base to go by now.

Aren't you talking about the grey pad in your photos?

Re: new SMG handle wrap

Confusion seems to be setting in early this year. Let me be clear. The SMG comes with a grip. A traditional grip. It's called a jum-tong. It's what the bow is born with.
The SMG also comes with a grey wrapping the use of which is referred to in the video. Watch, please: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0a0fcgXfTBA
This is a personal choice, I guess, although I must say find it odd that it is identical to a material sold here in skiing crazy Norway to sand down your skis. Identical.
Now, my point is, why put anything onto the traditional grip. But I repeat myself.

If you make any point politely, peoples ears are open and you don't have to repeat yourself. When you get all righteous and offensive, most people tend to raise defenses, even if you are totally correct. PS. I should start following this advice for myself too.

Yeah, as I thought, the confusion is on your end. Like basilisk120 and myself have tried to tell you, that's not the grip that normally comes with SMG. Gungsulwon probably swapped it out for their grip wrap in your order.

The one that comes with the SMG is a hard plastic/rubber one, that looks like this: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/12212152/SMG%20grip.jpg

It's quite ugly, not very comfortable, and too stiff to wrap around a grip easily.

Re: new SMG handle wrap

All my SMG bows came with a blue foam grip (well, one was black) and the rubber strips. For 2 years I refused to use the rubber strips because I found them uncomfortable. I tried tennis grips, and different types of leather.  But, when I had to shoot in the rain for a day I realized that grip is important. Now I use only those grips and really like them.

The rubber stripes are usually about 1 to 1.5cm wide. If the strip is wider, then look careful on the back side, as it was precut and you can just pull it apart. In the photo above there are 3 black ones for example - you can clearly see the lines. One strip is enough for one grip. I use super glue to glue it.

The foam grip can be shaped with a knife. Cut it a bit smaller, so that with the grip wrap applied, it fits your hand. If you cut too much, you could always find some harder rubber piece to glue back. With the wrap on, when you grip the bow, you should have about one finger width space between the tips of your 3 lower fingers and the base of your palm. To test the wrap, apply glue just at the ends of the strip. If you're happy, undo one end, unwrap and then re-wrap by applying glue all the way.

If you want to use natural materials, you could try stingray skin.

For handle shape, I prefer the back side of the bow in the middle and the belly side of the bottom one in the picture below:

Re: new SMG handle wrap

Cool, very interesting and informative
I used sueded leather to cover my bow's grip, previously supposedly cheyenne yarn. I probably added too much foam rubber under it... which i got and was supposedly for doors or something, pretty soft and worked well.
The handle is a little too big, I guess, but not uncomfortable at all

Re: new SMG handle wrap

I bought some vet wrap, I am going to replace my kaya ktb cover since it was dirty and I have wanted to try to reshape the handle since its quite large. Hopefully it all works out.
