Topic: korean measurement units

More common conversions:
1 don = 57.872 grains = 3.75 grams
4 don = 231.488 grains = 15 grams
4.5 don = 260.4240 grains = 16.875 grams
5 don = 289.360 grains = 18.75 grams
5.5 don = 318.296 grains = 20.625 grams
6 don = 347.2 grains = 22.5 gram
6.5 don = 376.2 grains = 24.375 gram
7 don = 405.1 grains =  26.25 gram
7.5 don = 434 grains = 28.125 gram
8 don = 463 grains =  30 gram
8.5 don = 491 grains = 31.875 grams
9 don = 520.848 grains = 33.75 grams
9.5 don = 549.784 grains = 35.625 grams
10 don = 578.72 grains = 37.5 grams

I tried to keep the error of inches within 0.05" or so. I hope. I think the length is nock groove to tip of point. Or maybe it's total length... nock groove to sangsa (I guess normal western length) would be around 1.3" less I think. And draw length around 0.8" less than the arrow length to tip of point here (I get plenty close to 32" d/l with 7.5 chi arrows) .

2ja 3chi = 69.69cm = 27.437"
2ja 3.5chi = 71.205cm = 28"
2ja 4chi = 72.72cm = 28.6"
2ja 4.5chi = 74.235cm = 29.2
2ja 5chi = 75.75cm = 29.82"
2ja 5.5chi = 77.265cm = 30.4"
2ja 6chi = 78.78cm = 31"
2ja 6.5chi = 80.295cm = 31.61"
2ja 7chi = 81.81cm = 32.21"
2ja 7.5chi = 83.325cm = 32.8"
2ja 8chi = 84.84cm = 33.4"
2ja 8.5chi = 86.355cm = 34"
2ja 9chi = 87.87cm = 34.6"
2ja 9.5chi = 89.385cm = 35.2"
2ja 10chi = 90.90cm = 35.78"
2ja 10.5chi = 92.415cm = 36.38"
2ja 11chi = 93.93cm = 37"

1 ja is 30.3cm. 1chi is 3.03cm.
1st number marked in those Korean carbon arrows is 2 ja + n chi
Generally if the number looks like 70 it actually is 7.0? and thus 2 ja + 7 chi = 2*30.3cm + 7*3.03cm = 81.81cm?

2nd number is weight in don. 6.5 don = 376.168 grain
1 don = 57.872 grain

Am I right?

Thanks

You could ask Thomas/bluelake if he doesn't chime in, he sure knows this.

Re: korean measurement units

But... this chart puts the length as 80.8 for the 2ja7chi arrows
This chart seems to make 1 ja = 30.32cm for the 2 ja 5 chi entry, but 29.92592 for the 2 ja 7 chi entry... maybe they messed up.. I measured a random 2 ja 7 chi arrow and nock groove beginning to arrow tip seemed closer to 81.81cm

http://www.smgung.co.kr/2010/image/r_20 … 20size.jpg

I measured, on a random arrow, sangsa beginning to arrow tip to be 3.21cm, so maybe draw length = arrow length - 1.26"?

Re: korean measurement units

ja=30.3cm, chi=3.03cm so 2ja 7chi should be 81.8, typo

It's in Korean, so I guess it's not for Kyudo

Re: korean measurement units

Hi, I'm new so apologies in advance.

I'm finding figuring out my arrow length a bit confusing,
too boot I have dyslexia.

Here's what I do know -

I took my measurement according to the picture shown here it's 33 inches.

My bow, yet to arrive, has a draw weight of 30 (it's my first) and draw length of 32.

So what should the length and weight should my arrow be?

Again, I'm new and just hoping to get this right.

I'd be grateful for any guidance.

My sincerest thanks! smile

Re: korean measurement units

What the picture suggests is that you measure from middle of neck to what appears the area where the base of your fingers meet the palm of your hand, with your arm extended out just like that.  Then add add 3cm.  This will allow the blunted end of the arrow to stick out a bit once you reach your full draw.

For arrow weight, the easiest thing to do is tell the merchant your bow's draw weight, how far you intend to draw it, and the length of your arrow.  Then they can assist you appropriately.

Re: korean measurement units

Thanks very much for your response!

Yes, then luckily I have managed to do the measurement correctly.

I will follow your advice.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers!
