Topic: Shooting a thumb ring without pain

I have just started shooting using a thumb ring on a traditional bow, but after shooting today I am convinced I am holding the ring wrong or have the pressure from the string acting on the wrong part of my thumb. If any one could give me any tips or pointers on how to properly use (proper position of thumb ring when bow is at full draw) and draw with a thumb ring, or any tips what so ever, it would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks
Joe

You might wish to try a different style of ring, as the one you are using looks like it would cause quite a pinch point.

Try a leather one.  I find it feels way better and I feel I have more control.

I'm afraid that ring's nonsense, it wouldn't hurt with a proper ring which is actually moulded to the shape of the thumb's curve, instead of just being a pipe with one side cut at an angle..

Re: Shooting a thumb ring without pain

the alibow brass painless ring is pretty painless. But I'm not sure of how compatible it is with Korean archery

Finding a thumb ring that is comfortable is likely harder than finding arrows of the perfect spine...

Just buy one from Vermil:

Re: Shooting a thumb ring without pain

Others have mentioned getting another ring would be a good thing.  I love my Vermil Victory rings.  But they haven't said why.   the ring you have looks really awkward to use.  First off the ring is grabbing the string away from the joint, this places more stress on the thumb and requires more tension to hold it.  Both of those are going to hinder getting a good clean release.

Second, I believe the pain is from the base of the ring digging into your thumb.  The string presses on the ring, this places the pressure on the meat of the thumb which allows the ring to rotate and dig into the lower part of the thumb.  A well designed ring should hold it while the pressure goes more into the joint and spread out from there.  This is much stronger and cleaner.

You may be able to use the ring in a similar fashion to a Manchu ring and get decent results but that is just an idea.

the guarded "lipped" ring from here should be good: https://www.facebook.com/CustomThumbRings/?fref=ts
if you have access to 3d printing, there was a model somewhere. I could try to find it...
cheap plastic vernier calipers from ebay, or better digital ones, could come in handy..

Re: Shooting a thumb ring without pain

Thank you for the reply's i have been trying to make the best of this thumb ring but after trying to remold it to fit better it seems like a lost cause.

After creating essentially a leather thumb ring squeeze under the horn one I was getting a smooth release, however the sting seemed to catch on the tip of my thumb...
Is this a normal occurrence when shooting with a thumb ring or is my particular ring not long enough (or I suspect it is more my release is that of a newbie)
Any help appreciated  smile

longer thumb rings help against that but it also can be a bit of a technique issue. try having your thumb less bent when holding the bow?..
I'm having problems too, with getting a clean release.. I think
