Topic: Converting target to hunting arrows

I'm starting to think how I can get some hunting arrows for my 60# bow. I'm pretty sure most of you make your hunting arrows but i was thinking I could convert the carbon target arrows I get from Korea. Getting good parts for arrows that suit the ktb is pretty hard here.  Obviously i have to change the head to a broad head or some thing which means i probably have to change the feathers too. Any thoughts or idea? has any one else tried that or know where i could just buy some off the net.

You don't need to change the feathers. You need to find broadheads that weigh the same as your arrow points or your spine will be off. So first step is measuring the points.

Re: Converting target to hunting arrows

Points are very light, as they are machined brass.  I don't have one handy to weigh, but I doubt they are more than a few dozen grains.  Also, I agree you do not have to change the vanes out.

Do you mean these? http://www.koreanarchery.org/IMG_0288.JPG
If they're solid, they'll weigh quite a bit, probably 100gr. Brass is heavy after all

I have similar size/shaped points on my arrows and they're 160gr

They are not solid.  They are hollow.

How are they attached to the shaft? I thought they were screw in points so you could just screw in broadheads instead

Nowadays, they are glued on.

Re: Converting target to hunting arrows

In that case for carbon arrows the best plan is to get some arrows a little longer than you usually use, and have a pro shop cut the brass tips off and fit inserts for western broadheads.  You need a special saw to cut carbon cleanly and safely though, so take it to a specialist.

Hi guys, the heads are about 15 grams, I agree i'll probably have to get the heads chopped off and put western heads on. I really wanted to do it my self though because the guy at the pro store is an annoying smart ass. But I guess i'll have to put up with him again. arggg

If you have a Dremel tool with a carbide cutting wheel AND a disk sander to square the shaft ( or have access to ), you can do it yourself. smile

Re: Converting target to hunting arrows

Couldn't you use a head gun to melt the glue that is holding the brass head to the carbon shaft?  I am just wondering.

Re: Converting target to hunting arrows

Hey people,
I finally got round to trying this out, so I went round the the pro shop. The guy (who I still cannot stand) tells me that he only sells Easton parts and that none of the inserts fit the spine. I use the Kaya (33.4 inch -30.0g) KTB arrow. Does any one know what inserts I could use and where I could get some and some heads to go with them? Of course the guy then goes into this big spiel about how I should let him make me some arrows and bla bla bla I'm an expert.  He doesn't know any thing about Korean Traditional Archery which is fine but he's so small minded arrogant. I want to be able to put some broad heads on my arrows . Unfortunately Perth is a pretty one horse town when it comes to archery so I'll need to find a online source.

I just had a thought, The shafts that kaya uses for it's arrows surely can't be custom made just for them so surely they must come from another supplier. The writing on them is Korean so I have no idea where they come from, surely there must be some inserts made for them by that supplier. Maybe I should ask kaya.
