Hi, I was hoping for some input. I am getting weird arrow flight with my bow, have since I got it, I assumed it was something with my form or inconsistency in how I shoot but now that is am final getting used to my bow and comfortable with the draw weight I am not so sure. They don't fly straight they tend to be a bit all over the place. I am wondering if maybe it's my knock point or even the arrows spine. My bow is 61.5#, and the arrows are 9 don, I don't what that converts to. Here is a photo of my knock point if it helps. I plan to ask master Kim they next time I get to his range but I am not 100% sure when I will next be able to go yet.

Ugh heart breaking, I never even got to shoot it, I was stupid and didnt test the compatibility of my clear coat, upon touching the gold bands they immediately started dissolving into a mess, hopefully I can figure out a way to strip the paint and start again, as is the arrow looks destined for the trash. sad

And one down! Freshly painted on my home made cardboard cresting rig. Didn't come out to bad! Going to let it cure 24 then clear coat it, Hopefully the gold holds up to the clear coat, my gold enamel looks significantly better them my acrylic so I decided it was worth the risk. Gold bands are a little bigger them I had envisioned but it's close enough! Will be curious to see if the paint stays on when I fire it for the first time. Lol

Damn that Lego set up is brilliant! Haha I used to have mind storms and all the electronic stuff I could have totally rigged up something if. I had it all still. As is the red bands are painted on my test arrow and they went on perfect aside from a spot I accidentally touched when I was taking off the masking tape, lesson learned fold tabs o. The end so it can be done with tweezers. I was planning to rig up a stand to turn my arrows in out of a cut up card board box. Just hope my detail brushes will hold enough paint to do a full solid ring in one go to keep it clean, but the gold I am planning to use needs to be a bit on the thick side to get a good sheen, so we will see, if all goes well when I apply then I will clear coat it and let it all cure and take it to the range and see how it holds up next week.

Man that looks really good.  Did you make a jig for cresting them?

No, I wish I had stuff to make one as it's going to be tough to finish them the way I want to without a jig. Will see if they look as good as these when I actually paint them, which is partially why I am going to use the simpler pattern easier masking in and less red to screw up haha. I'm going to just mask it with tape and then hit it with some red lacquer and then attempt to put thin bands of gold or silver paint over the masking tape lines. Now that I have the pattern decided on I should be able to get one test arrow done tomorrow.

So been playing with a bunch of patterns, have mocked up quite a few with paper and a marker. These four are the lead contenders, far right and middle left are the front runners. I have a single arrow I am going to test paint, did a coat of white lacquer on it the other day and I have some red all ready to go when I decide.

All the patterns I have tried.

You, but he has been telling to just turn my hand more as you said, but I am already twisting it as much as I can. That or he doesn't quite exactly understand what I mean when I explain it. I think taping my fingers might help shed a bit of light when I try it, if it's the string it might pull on the tape, if its my thumb nail the friction should be less noticeable.

dave42 wrote:

Is that part of your index finger rubbing the string when you draw? Does your index finger get thwack by the string when you release? If so you might want to twist your hand counter-clockwise and make sure it's outside the string.

If it's your thumb nail scraping on it, maybe tuck your thumb tip further up?

I definitely don't think my finger is getting struck by the string,  if it was I would be confused as to how since it's the inner side that touches my middle finger that is being effected. It's a shame but a few weeks before I took up Korean archery  there were some people at the range I go to who had a high speed camera for some project filming people shoot, a single recording of my release would probably have shown the exact problem. Going to try getting athletic tape and wrapping my fingers the next time I shoot and seeing what that does.

I don't know if it's normal or if I am just some how really botching my release, but I am someone consistently hitting, rubbing or doing something to the inside of my right pointer finger. I am doing whatever it is consistently enough that I have developed and unpleasant callus on the spot. At first I though it was somehow the bowstring doing it, but that makes no sense. So my current theory is that on release the friction from my thumb nail is injuring my finger. I get used to it each time I shoot towards the end but when I first start shooting it screws with me bad. Anyone experience this and possibly have tips to combat this?

Measured from the grip.

From what spot on the grip? Since the back of the grip is angled, would you measure from the center? Or from the bottom closest to the string?

Hi, I am wondering is someone can answer this. I am wondering about the brace on on Korean bows, my 61.5# SMG in particular. I found some old topics that pointed to 5.5-6", but I am unsure from where brace height is measured on a Korean bow, and how much it actually matters. When I shoot with Master Heon Kim I he topic never comes up, we just string them up and shoot them at whatever brace height they are at. His accuracy does not seem to be at all effected, I am curious if maybe brace height matters less at such extreme range at 150m? Any insight would be appreciated.

What Blue lake said is exactly why I chose to buy my SMG from Master Kim. I will have him as a resource and source of knowledge, I liked the idea of the YMG on eBay purely for price, but I was also wondering what the heck I would do if I ran into trouble, and was going back and forth between it and just spending a bit more and getting an SMG from Koreanbow.com or go cheaper and start with a Kaya from a large online bow shop. Maybe one day a Hwarang for me, because I really love the look of the natural wood and I think they are a lot prettier.

Any specific type of paint you would recommend? I was thinking I could just write my name on the vanes as you said but like the idea of adding a little decoration instead.

Hi, I just got my first bow and set of arrows today. Each round of shooting ended with confusion as me and a fellow member at our range sorted through our almost identical arrows. I want to paint a spiral or series of rings about 4"-6" long on the shafts on mine just forward of the vanes, I am wondering if anyone does this and could recommend a type of paint that might best adhere to Korean carbonic arrow shafts.

Wont be getting that YMG bow, because I now own an SMG. Just got home from shooting at Master Kim's(exciting shooting, rain came in and we shot in a proper storm haha)  today he had me shooting a 61.5# SMG. And with it I scored my very first hit, as well as a second, third and an unintended fourth on a target I wasn't aiming at, haha. He offered me the bow with a belt and zipper case for $300 and 11 arrows for $7 a piece, quick math in my head and it was significantly cheaper then the YMG, which while a lot prettier, would have left me waiting quite some time and since this is the same model bow he shoots I figured it would be good since he obviously trusts them and any potential issues that could crop up he could help me with. Plus I liked the idea of owning the bow I had my first hit with.

Hwarangs are just YMG sold under a new name (and higher price)

The ebay bow you linked is YMG (chinese characters on the limb say so), just $290 instead of the $450 Hwarang price

Thanks! Shame YMGs site has no English option. And definitely happy to hear that the YMGs are the Hwarang bows, makes me even more confident in this as an option since I have heard both but good things about them.

And PedroC I asked the seller and these bows like the SMGs also have the crooked tips and are made in right and left handed versions.

Hi, joined not to long ago, I am new to Korean archery, I recently joined a range and started taking lessons with Master Heon Kim at his range in Valley Center, CA. I have been shooting about 6 or so years, and for the last 4-4.5 years with a Hungarian bow, which sadly bit the dust last week. I have always had an interewt in the various forms archery has taken, but until a few months ago had absolutely no idea I could learn an entirely new form locally. I am really enjoying it, can't put my finger on why but there is just something even more relaxing about it then taking my recurve to the local range.

interesting. what korean bows do you have? i have a 41lbs(@30") 50" song mu gung (it's like 55#@32" according to my scale) and a Nomad 53" around the same weight.. getting a 25#@30" Segye for form practice and short range, around 33# at full draw at most hopefully

That one seems like a great deal though. And it doesn't have the crooked tips/limbs to the right side? (for a RH bow, like my SMG)

Though I'm not sure of how that helps or hurts, I can't notice much of a difference on the shot with a bow with straight limbs.
I wonder if that ymg bow is different from the one bluelake sells. (which actually is also YMG)
The other bows I'd consider are the Segye from alibowshop.com ($200) and the Nomad from koreanbow.com ($220). I could give my thoughts on the Segye around December, I hope. But they're all much uglier than that YMG tongue
Armin Hirmer actually liked the Segye more than the Nomad...

I don't have a Korean bow of my own, I am using the bows of man whom is teaching me. So this one will be my first. I didn't know the SMG bows had the crooked tips like you mention, interesting, I will have to email the seller and ask about that. You mentioned YMGs site, any chance of a link? I  have tried to find SMGs site also with no luck. I will look up the other bows you mentioned, I have looked at the nomads, extremely tempting for the price.

I don't mind the weird grips, hurt like hell the first time I shot one but I am getting used to it. Mine I personally plan on putting a leather wrap over it though to make it more comfortable.

Where can I get more info on Hwarang bows? I found this site but that's pretty much it. http://www.koreanarchery.org/classic/hwarangbow.html

Hi, I am learning Korean archery and am slowly working my way up to the weight I would like to get(around 55-60lbs). I am doing my best to research what bow to get but its surprisingly difficult to find info on Korean bows online. Prices seem all over the place and I was thinking that when the time comes I am going to buy from a guy on eBay, talked with him briefly, he used to sell SMG bows but is now selling YMG bows due to apparent quality problems with SMG bows. Anyone think they could chime in with Any info about SMG vs YMG or other bows I should look into? While performance is my primary concern in my next bow, aesthetics are also a part of it, I quite like bows with the natural bark on the limbs, I have seen and shot a couple with the artificial birch and I am personally not a fan of how this looks, makes them feel cheap.
Bow I was thinking about. http://m.ebay.com/itm/271805777517
