Topic: Yuyeopjeon (유엽전)

On FB, Kim Hyeon-gi and I were debating a type of arrow, called "yuyeopjeon" (https://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?f … hoto_reply).  I know it as the KTA target arrow that was used at the end of the Joseon dynasty before the brass blunts we use nowadays.  The point looks a bit like a pop rivet (see http://www.arrow.or.kr/bbs/board.php?bo … ;wr_id=38).  However, Hyeon-gi keeps referring to a flat blade head, which is very different.  It brings up something that has puzzled me for years, as the "yuyeopjeon" is called a "willow leaf" arrow, which the pop rivet point doesn't resemble at all.  I'll have to do some more searching on it, but maybe much older arrows of that type were flat blades.

The discussion started after I posted a question regarding a point a friend of mine found.  It is huge, so he believed it to be a spear point, which, at the time, I didn't question.  However, something was gnawing at my mind.  When Hyeon-gi called it an arrow point, the lights went on.  Korean arrows have tanged points, while Korean spears were socketed.  There were massive arrows (I have a couple reproductions of similar size), which were used during the Joseon dynasty (such as in the Military Service Examination).

Unfortunately, my friend was not pleased with the news (and insists I am wrong--that it is, indeed, a spear point).  I pointed out to him that such a massive arrow point, in my opinion, is a much more interesting and unique find than a spear point.  I'll show him my reproductions and hopefully it will convince him.

Here is a pic of his "spear" point: http://www.koreanarchery.org/spear1.JPG
