Re: Nocks for Bamboo Arrows

3 rivers offers these:

Another option would perhaps be to find a store like Woodcraft or order from them online some of their wooden dowels:

I don't see dogwood or holly though.  Also, a lathe is probably going to be very essential to the process if you go down the route of purchasing dowels.

Re: Nocks for Bamboo Arrows

I pick a finger-size twig of local wood(Duranta erecta) and work from there so I have a blank with circular grain. I wanted to try several other woods but I figured the grain will become parallel and I have to be more careful when cutting nock grooves. With a twig with circular grain I can just cut it in any direction and it will be just fine.

I wonder if Acacia pennata can be used for making nocks. I have a few and still in process of drying. it's a white wood with very fine grain. Until it's dried completely I will have to make do with what I have. If it works I'll be delighted since I can buy them in a bunch and most are relatively straight and they come is the size I need too.

Re: Nocks for Bamboo Arrows

I see that this thread is over a year old, and this post doesn't really answer the OP but it's on the front page of the arrows forum...

On the bamboo arrows I've made, I just did self nocks with a file and wrapped them with nylon thread, also crossing thread through the nock itself. I haven't had one break at the nock, although plenty split near the head.

I imagine bone would be good to make nocks out of?

Hi Pedro C!! smile   Please use caution when using horn nocks unless you have experience with them.
Check out Sebastian Plum's video on YouTube!!  If you're a member here Sebastian I'm sorry for your loss!! sad

Hello

Wow... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwQ1FMiyHe8

I hope that doesn't happen as much with self nocks.

Guess dry shooting korean bows is very fatal to them

Re: Nocks for Bamboo Arrows

Hi Pedro C!!
I carve bone and horn and know from experience that horn can have a small fracture that looks like part of the horn itself unless checked closely.  That said,  it's really durable and strong for thumb rings etc.  Many cultures have used both bone and horn for nocks on arrows,  you just need to check them as you would any nock that your shooting!! wink   Congrats on your new Nomad KTB!!  I've been interested in this bow and would like to hear what you think of it. big_smile
