Welcome to the long road that is Korean archery!

Hey Moose,
I've often wondered this myself and I've put the different stance down to the smaller size of the bow. Korean archers shoot a smaller bow, with a longer draw then their European counterparts so they need more of a wind up, which the diagonal stance gives them. The answer almost certainly lies somewhere deep in the physiology of the back. There are probably also some benefits in regard to angle of deflection too. I think Korean bows point their arrows further away from the bow's centre line and it's probably easier to get your body inline with that more deflected arrow with the diagonal stance. Honestly I'm far from an expert though, so your guess is as good as mine.
Hope that helped. big_smile

Hey again guys,
Sorry i got my picture link incorrect. The picture is working now for me. It's not electrical tape but heat shrink tubing, you just shrink it with a blow dryer. It comes in as many colours as electrical tape though and it's extremely cheap, less then a few dollars a meter here.

Hey guys,
recently I've been doing some arrow making and I ran into the problem of my bamboo shafts splitting without a binding. It was clear that I needed some bindings to prevent them splitting but the traditional bindings look tricky to do my self. So I came up with the idea of using electrical shrink tube instead and it has worked fabulously (see pic). I'm sure someone has done this before but I thought I would share the idea just in case it might interest someone.

These things happen with bows, sometimes there are just unknown weaknesses in the material or something just doesn't come out right in the finished bow. Freddie is normally very good about replacing stuff. Anytime I've had anything break or get lost in the mail he's always sent a replacement. Just email him and you should get a new one promptly.

Just out of interest, I've always wondered if people go bow hunting in Korea or what kind of hunting they do in general? I always imagine Korea being a pretty small, populated and industrialized country and I didn't see there being a lot of hunting going down, so forgive me for my ignorance.

Hey Guys,
I'm also considering a trip to Korea. One of my Finnish friends is currently on exchange in Japan and the two of us were thinking about going on a trip to Korea. I'm not so much interested in shooting although that would be cool but I was wondering if there are any walk in stores or custom bow makers that I could buy some new equipment from that you would know of bluelake or anyone? Would there be a much wider range of equipment available then on the net or is that just in my imagination? I'd like to buy new female and male thumb rings that fit me better as well as a better new bow.

How would you compaire the two , the yumi and the ktb? I've always wanted a yumi but they seem very expensive. Maybe it was just the website I went to.perhaps you could recommend a website or supplier?=)

I just had a thought, The shafts that kaya uses for it's arrows surely can't be custom made just for them so surely they must come from another supplier. The writing on them is Korean so I have no idea where they come from, surely there must be some inserts made for them by that supplier. Maybe I should ask kaya.

Hey people,
I finally got round to trying this out, so I went round the the pro shop. The guy (who I still cannot stand) tells me that he only sells Easton parts and that none of the inserts fit the spine. I use the Kaya (33.4 inch -30.0g) KTB arrow. Does any one know what inserts I could use and where I could get some and some heads to go with them? Of course the guy then goes into this big spiel about how I should let him make me some arrows and bla bla bla I'm an expert.  He doesn't know any thing about Korean Traditional Archery which is fine but he's so small minded arrogant. I want to be able to put some broad heads on my arrows . Unfortunately Perth is a pretty one horse town when it comes to archery so I'll need to find a online source.

I've always been attracted to Korean bows more for the traditional side of things and I think most hobby archers are. I don't think they Korean bow hunting market is that great But whatever floats people's boats. I know Americans love every thing in cammo so maybe hes onto a winner.

Good news every one! Kaya sent me a replacement bow. I think they have been doing some product development, it's a lot better then my old one. I think my old bow was probably a bit of a lemon. No complaints here.

On further inspection I've noticed the bottom pad is quite badly worn on one shoulder , i think the string coming off might have some thing to do with that.

I was shooting today with my 60# Kaya ktb when things started going wrong, When I first shot it the string violently flew off the bow and the bow was left in my hands string less . This had never happened to me in normal shooting before and at first I was quite concerned, I had also quite badly hurt my hand in the process . I decided it might have some thing to do with the string which was quite worn. So I replaced it with another one and tried again and once more it violently flew off the bow. By this point I was really worried there might be some thing seriously wrong with my bow but I decided that I would try at lest once more to make sure it wasn't just a freak occurrence. Again the same thing happened and when I went to string the bow again I herd a distinct cracking sound and I saw the bottom limb of the bow had totally failed. There is now a large crack on the side of the bow  and the bottom limb can hold no weight (see photos). I cannot understand why this has happened and if the bow failed because of the dry firing caused by the string slipping off the bow or the problems are related. Either way I shot it in no way differently then I normally do. This is most puzzling. Can any one think of any reason why this happened? I've had the bow for a year and i'll admit I've used it a lot but this bow really isn't that old. I'm going to try and write to Kaya and see if they will send me a replacement.

Hey People
So I've been shooting only with my 60# for the last few month and i think I've improved a lot. I'd appreciate a critique, the only thing i could say myself is that I could probably get a few more CM draw out of my bow still.
what do you think?

Hi guys, the heads are about 15 grams, I agree i'll probably have to get the heads chopped off and put western heads on. I really wanted to do it my self though because the guy at the pro store is an annoying smart ass. But I guess i'll have to put up with him again. arggg

I'm starting to think how I can get some hunting arrows for my 60# bow. I'm pretty sure most of you make your hunting arrows but i was thinking I could convert the carbon target arrows I get from Korea. Getting good parts for arrows that suit the ktb is pretty hard here.  Obviously i have to change the head to a broad head or some thing which means i probably have to change the feathers too. Any thoughts or idea? has any one else tried that or know where i could just buy some off the net.

Thank you will, my horn is in the post. All our cows here get their horns cut for safety reasons so horn is hard to come by. I think most of them come from the thrid world these days where they don't do that .

Is the head up design to keep your feathers dry? or is there some other reason i can't think of.
